What Carpentry Services Actually Cover in Dubai
When most people hear "carpenter," they think of someone building a bookshelf. In Dubai, carpentry covers a much broader range of work than you'd expect. From custom-built wardrobes that fit those awkward alcoves in older buildings, to kitchen cabinet refacing, door replacements, partition walls, built-in furniture, and everything in between.
Dubai's property market creates constant demand for carpentry. Tenants want to personalise their rentals without major renovations. Landlords need damaged fixtures repaired before new tenants move in. Villa owners want custom storage solutions. Offices need fit-outs and workspace modifications. Commercial spaces need counters, shelving, and display units.
The trick is finding a carpenter who can actually deliver quality work at a fair price. Dubai has thousands of carpenters - from one-man operations running out of a van to full workshop setups with CNC machines and spray booths. The range in quality is enormous.
Common Carpentry Jobs in Dubai (and What They Cost)
Door Repair and Replacement
Doors take a beating in Dubai. Humidity warps wooden doors, heavy use damages frames, and cheap contractor-grade doors installed during construction often don't last more than a few years. Here's what you'll pay:
- Internal door replacement (standard hollow-core): AED 300-600 per door including fitting
- Internal door replacement (solid core): AED 600-1,200 per door including fitting
- Front door replacement (solid wood or composite): AED 1,500-5,000 depending on material and security features
- Door hinge adjustment/repair: AED 100-200
- Door frame repair: AED 200-400
- Warped door planing: AED 150-300 (but this is often a temporary fix - humidity will warp it again)
If your doors stick during humid months and open freely during winter, the issue is humidity-related swelling. The long-term fix is either replacing with moisture-resistant doors or installing proper seals and ensuring your AC dehumidifies adequately.
Kitchen Cabinet Work
Cabinet repair and replacement is one of the most requested carpentry jobs in Dubai. The original cabinets in many Dubai apartments (particularly those built during the 2005-2012 construction boom) used cheap particleboard that's now swelling, delaminating, or falling apart.
- Cabinet door replacement/refacing: AED 250-500 per door
- Full cabinet replacement (per linear metre): AED 800-2,000 depending on material
- Drawer repair/replacement: AED 150-400
- Soft-close hinge upgrade: AED 30-50 per hinge (worth every dirham)
- New countertop installation: AED 300-900 per linear metre (see our kitchen renovation guide for detailed countertop costs)
Built-In Wardrobes and Storage
Dubai apartments are notorious for having too little storage. Built-in wardrobes maximise every centimetre of available field. A skilled carpenter can transform an empty wall or unused alcove into a fully functional wardrobe with shelving, hanging rails, drawers, and even integrated lighting.
- Basic built-in wardrobe (per linear metre): AED 800-1,500
- Mid-range with soft-close and organisers: AED 1,500-2,500 per linear metre
- Premium with integrated lighting and accessories: AED 2,500-4,000 per linear metre
- Walk-in closet fit-out: AED 5,000-15,000 depending on size and specification
Furniture Assembly
IKEA and other flat-pack furniture brands are hugely popular in Dubai, and many people either don't have the time or the inclination to assemble it themselves. Professional assembly is cheap and avoids the frustration of missing screws and confusing instruction manuals.
- Single item (bed frame, wardrobe, desk): AED 100-300
- Multiple items (bedroom set): AED 300-800
- Full apartment furnishing from flat-pack: AED 800-2,000
Custom Furniture
If you want something specific that you can't find off-the-shelf, a custom build might be the answer. Dubai has excellent carpentry workshops (many in Al Quoz and Ras Al Khor industrial areas) that can build almost anything from drawings or reference photos.
- Custom bookshelf/display unit: AED 1,500-5,000
- Custom TV unit: AED 2,000-6,000
- Custom dining table: AED 3,000-10,000
- Custom bed frame with storage: AED 3,000-8,000
Lead time for custom furniture is typically 2-4 weeks from design approval to delivery.
Partition Walls and False Ceilings
Gypsum partitions and false ceilings are technically a mix of carpentry and gypsum work. They're commonly used in Dubai to:
- Divide large rooms into separate spaces (common in shared apartments)
- Create home offices or study areas
- Build storage rooms within existing floor plans
- Lower ceilings to hide AC ductwork or create recessed lighting
For detailed costs and installation information, see our gypsum partition guide.
Flooring Installation
Wood and vinyl flooring installation falls under carpentry in Dubai:
- Laminate flooring supply and fit: AED 40-80 per square metre
- Engineered wood flooring supply and fit: AED 100-250 per square metre
- Solid wood flooring supply and fit: AED 200-500 per square metre
- LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) supply and fit: AED 50-120 per square metre
- Skirting board installation: AED 20-40 per linear metre
Dubai-specific advice: Think twice before installing solid wood flooring. The humidity fluctuations cause expansion and contraction that leads to gaps, buckling, or cupping. Engineered wood or high-quality LVP handles Dubai's climate much better and costs less.
Materials That Work (and Don't Work) in Dubai
This section could save you thousands of dirhams in replacement costs.
Use These:
- Marine plywood - moisture-resistant, strong, ideal for cabinetry and built-ins in Dubai's humid conditions
- MDF-MR (Moisture Resistant) - the green-core or blue-core MDF. Good for interior applications where it won't get directly wet
- Melamine-faced chipboard - budget-friendly for internal shelving and non-structural applications
- Hardwoods (teak, oak, walnut) - beautiful and durable but must be properly sealed for Dubai. Best for furniture rather than structural elements
Avoid These:
- Standard chipboard/particleboard - absorbs moisture and swells. The number one cause of premature cabinet failure in Dubai
- Untreated softwood - warps, splits, and attracts termites. Dubai has an active termite population that loves untreated wood
- Standard MDF (non-MR grade) - swells in high humidity. Fine for areas with excellent AC control, risky otherwise
How to Find a Good Carpenter in Dubai
cheque their workshop: A carpenter with a proper workshop (not just a toolbox in a van) can handle more complex jobs and usually delivers better quality. Many good workshops are in Al Quoz, Ras Al Khor, and DIP (Dubai Investment Park).
Ask about materials: A good carpenter will discuss material options and their suitability for your specific application. If they're pushing the cheapest option without explaining the trade-offs, be cautious.
Get a sample: For big jobs (kitchen cabinets, built-in wardrobes), ask to see a sample of the finish. Colour, texture, and edge quality vary hugely between suppliers.
Written quotation: Always get a written quote that specifies materials, dimensions, hardware (soft-close hinges, drawer runners, etc.), timeline, and payment terms.
References: Ask for photos of recent completed projects. cheque Google reviews. In Dubai community groups (Facebook and WhatsApp), ask for recommendations specific to your area.
When to Repair vs When to Replace
This comes up constantly. Here's the practical guide:
Repair when:
- The damage is cosmetic (scratches, chips, minor dents)
- The structure is solid but the finish is worn
- It's a single door or panel rather than a full set
- The item has sentimental or antique value
- Repair cost is less than 40% of replacement cost
Replace when:
- The material is swollen, delaminated, or crumbling (this is structural failure, not cosmetic damage)
- The original material is cheap particleboard that wasn't designed to last
- Multiple components are damaged (replacing 3-4 doors out of 10 starts to approach the cost of replacing all 10)
- You're renovating and want a cohesive look
- The existing design or layout doesn't work for your needs
