Power Keeps Tripping in Dubai: Causes and How to Fix It
A breaker that trips once and stays reset is usually a one-off, an appliance briefly drawing too much current, or a transient fault. A breaker that trips repeatedly is not a nuisance. It's a protection device telling you there's a real fault somewhere, and the fault needs to be found before you can safely leave it reset.
Types of Breaker and What They Protect
Most Dubai residential properties have two types in the distribution board.
MCBs (Miniature Circuit Breakers) protect against overload and short circuits. An overload is too much current drawn by too many appliances running together. A short circuit is a direct connection between live and neutral or live and earth conductors, this causes a massive spike and the MCB trips immediately.
RCCBs (Residual Current Circuit Breakers) protect against earth leakage. When current flows somewhere it shouldn't, into a person, into damp building material, through insulation that's broken down, the RCCB detects the imbalance between live and neutral current and disconnects within milliseconds. This is what protects against electric shock.
RCBOs combine both functions in one unit. Knowing which type tripped tells you what kind of fault you're dealing with.
What Causes Repeated Tripping
Overloaded kitchen circuit. Dubai kitchens pack a lot of load into one circuit, kettle, microwave, toaster, and air fryer can run near-simultaneously. Each draws high wattage, and together they exceed the breaker rating. The fix is simple: don't run them at the same time, or have the circuit separated by an electrician.
Earth leakage from an appliance. Washing machines, water heaters, dishwashers, and AC units develop insulation faults over time, particularly in Dubai's humidity. The live conductor inside the appliance contacts metal casing or moisture, and current leaks to earth, the RCCB trips. Unplug appliances from the affected circuit one at a time and reset after each. The trip that doesn't come back identifies which appliance is the problem.
Fixed wiring fault. If the breaker trips with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the wiring inside the walls or ceiling, not in any appliance. This requires an electrician.
Moisture in the distribution board or sockets. In Dubai's coastal humidity, condensation inside socket boxes and around light fittings in bathrooms and kitchens causes leakage currents. Older properties near the coast or in areas with high groundwater are more prone to this.
Ageing breaker. Breakers have a service life. An old MCB or RCCB that trips at currents below its rated capacity needs replacement, not repeated resetting.
How to Diagnose It Yourself
- Open the distribution board and identify which breaker has moved to the off or middle position.
- Switch it fully off, then back on.
- If it trips immediately with nothing connected, fixed wiring fault. Call an electrician and don't reset again.
- If it holds, reconnect appliances on that circuit one at a time and wait. When the trip returns, you've found the faulty appliance.
- Unplug it and leave it out of use until it's been repaired or replaced.
Don't force a breaker to stay on. Bypassing or taping a breaker in the on position removes the protection completely and creates a fire risk.
When Tripping Is Dangerous
Get an electrician immediately if a breaker trips repeatedly despite being reset, if there are signs of burning or a burning smell from the distribution board, or if the trip coincides with a spark or a visible flash anywhere in the property. These aren't inconveniences, they're active electrical faults that carry a fire or shock risk.
DEWA Safety Requirements in Dubai
All electrical work in Dubai must be done by a DEWA-approved contractor. That covers changing breakers, rewiring sockets, and any work inside the distribution board. DIY electrical work is illegal under UAE regulations and typically voids home insurance policies. Our DEWA-approved electricians carry the necessary certification for all residential and commercial electrical work.
When to Call European Technical
Call our electrical team if:
- The breaker trips again immediately after reset with nothing connected
- You can't identify the faulty appliance by unplugging devices
- There's a burning smell from the distribution board or any socket
- The trip happened simultaneously with a bang or visible spark
- Multiple circuits are tripping at once
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to keep resetting a tripping breaker?
Resetting once to test is fine. If it trips again, stop resetting until you've identified the cause. Repeatedly forcing a breaker to reset can damage the device and risks leaving an active fault unprotected.
Why does my AC keep tripping the breaker?
AC units are the most common cause of MCB trips in Dubai homes. High start-up current, especially in summer heat when compressors work hardest, combined with the sustained load puts consistent pressure on the circuit. A failing compressor, wiring fault within the AC unit, or an undersized circuit breaker can all cause this. Have both the AC unit and the circuit checked.
How much does electrical fault finding cost in Dubai?
A diagnostic call-out for electrical fault finding typically costs AED 150 to AED 300. Full distribution board inspection and testing is AED 300 to AED 600. DEWA-compliant remedial wiring work is priced on scope.
Can I replace a circuit breaker myself in Dubai?
No. Electrical work in Dubai must be carried out by licensed, DEWA-approved electricians. DIY electrical work is illegal and can invalidate insurance.
