A smart lock is far less forgiving of that than a mechanical one.

The strike plate may sit a few millimetres out of line, so the bolt drags or only half engages. The existing cylinder or latch body may not match what the new lock expects. In a large villa the front door can also be a long way from the router, so the lock drops its connection and the app shows it as offline. We check all of this before any drilling starts.
